Hepatitis A Vaccine

The following individuals are at an increased risk of Hepatitis A and are eligible for free vaccine provided at the Sexual Health Clinic.

  • Individuals with chronic liver disease including Hepatitis B and C carriers
  • Injection drug users
  • Individuals engaging in sexual behaviours involving oral-anal contact, particularly men who have sex with men.

Those who are not eligible for the free vaccine should see their primary health care provider or pursue an immunization program with their employer.

  • People with known hypersensitivity to any of the vaccine components
  • People presenting with a severe febrile illness
  • Hepatitis A vaccine is given as a series of 2 doses over a period of 6 months.
  • If you are late for a dose, it is not necessary to restart the series.
  • Hepatitis A vaccine can be given at the same time as Hepatitis B vaccine.
  • You should remain in clinic for 15 minutes after vaccination.
  • Safety of this vaccine has not been established in pregnancy, therefore it should only be given when clearly needed.
  • Mild soreness, redness and swelling at the injection site
  • Within the first 24 hours headache, malaise, fatigue, fever, nausea and loss of appetite may be experienced by some people.
