HPV Vaccine

A vaccine used to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, genital warts and HPV related cancers. It is given as 3 injections over 6 months, (first dose, 2 months, 6 months)

Are allergic to the Gardasil vaccine or ingredient in the product.

  • Are allergic to yeast.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Redness, pain and/or swelling at the injection site.
  • Nausea, headache, dizziness and/or fever.
  • Lightheadedness response caused by the anxiety related to the injection.

Tell us immediately if you develop:

  • rash
  • start to itch
  • vomit
  • experience tightness in your chest or throat
  • have trouble breathing
  • swelling of the face, lips or tongue.

If you have these symptoms after you have left the clinic, seek emergency medical care. After receiving medical care, please call and let us know.

  • Store refrigerated at 2° to 8°C. Do not freeze and protect from light.
  • Gardasil® should be administered as soon as possible after being removed from refrigeration.
  • Gardasil® can be administered provided total time out of refrigeration (between 8°C and 25°C) does not exceed 72 hours.

Ontario offers publicly funded HPV-9 vaccine (Gardasil 9®) to eligible individuals as part of the high-risk HPV immunization program.

Eligible individuals include men who have sex with men who are 26 years of age or younger who identify as gay, bisexual, as well as some individuals who identify as trans, and who have not started their HPV vaccine series before September 5, 2017. These individuals can visit local public health units (Sexual Health Clinic in Ottawa) to get the vaccine. 

Those not eligible for the publicly funded HPV vaccine can get a prescription and purchase the vaccine from pharmacies. Some private health insurance plans may also offer coverage for the cost of the vaccine. Please see your health care provider or visit us at the Sexual Health Clinic.
