Hepatitis B Vaccine
Do I need this vaccine?
The following individuals are at an increased risk of Hepatitis B and are eligible for free vaccine provided at the Sexual Health Clinic.
- Individuals with chronic liver disease including Hepatitis C
- Sexual contacts of chronic carriers and acute cases of Hepatitis
- Injection drug users
- Men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners
Those who are not eligible for the free vaccine should see their primary health care provider or pursue an immunization program with their employer.
Who should not get the vaccine?
- People with known hypersensitivity to any of the vaccine components
- People presenting with a severe febrile illness
Dosage
- Hepatitis B vaccine is given as a series of 3 doses over a period of 6 months.
- If you are late for a dose, it is not necessary to restart the series.
Drug Interactions
- Hepatitis B vaccine can be given at the same time as Hepatitis A vaccine.
Precautions
- You should remain in clinic for 15 minutes after vaccination.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult with a healthcare provider.
Adverse Effects
- Mild soreness, redness and swelling at the injection site
- Within the first 24 hours headache, malaise, fatigue, fever, nausea and loss of appetite may be experienced by some people.
